"Dans la serre", qui est peint à la suite de "Chez le Père Lathuille", marque le retour de Manet vers un style plus lisse et précis. Il fit poser ses sujets (Jules Guillemet et son épouse américaine) dans la serre d'un ami voisin. Il est intéressant de noter que Manet accorde une même importance à chacun des éléments de la scène : tout est peint avec un degré de finition pratiquement identique. Il est remarquable en particulier que l'arrière-plan de feuillage soit peint de façon si méticuleuse que les différentes plantes en sont clairement identifiables. L'original a été soigneusement examiné, d'abord en exposition temporaire à Madrid, puis à l'Alte Nationalgalerie de Berlin (où il occupe la place d'honneur de la salle impressionniste), et les couleurs et détails ont fait l'objet de notes en vue de la réalisation de cette reproduction. Le gris de la robe en particulier a semblé être constitué d'un mélange de magenta et de vert de cobalt, couleurs qui existaient déjà au temps de Manet, et le résultat fut effectivement probant. "The Conservatory" (greenhouse) which followed "At Père Lathuille's" in the same year, marked Manet's return to a smoother, tighter style. He posed his subjects (Jules Guillemet and his american wife ) for this work in the conservatory of a friend who lived nearby. It's interesting to note that Manet here gives almost equal importance to all elements of the scene : everything is painted with practically the same degree of finish. Remarkeably even, the background foliage, which is intended to be seen as actual leaves of recognisably different plants. Manet's original was examined first during a temporary exhibit in Madrid, then in the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin (where it occupies the central place in the impressionist room), and notes were taken as to the colours and other important details before this reproduction was commenced. The grey of the dress for example appeared to be made with a mix of a magenta coloured lake and cobalt green. As these two coulours were available to Manet they were tried and proved to be the key to success. Manet was known for the delight he took in reproducing the real aspect of things with mere strokes of wet paint applied into and onto one another in quick and clever fashion. "The Conservatory" is a carefully constructed work and one of the major works in Manet's career. Claude Guillemet |
