Taking Manet's career as a whole, "The Plum" is one of the best examples of what Manet often liked to paint and how he liked to paint it : Parisian city-life scenes and in a style that can be termed semi-realist / semi-impressionist and with a technique that was characteristically very slick. Here, one can see his well-known texture of paint. The dress, executed in long strokes appears as though painted with yogourt. And then there's the marble counter, which appears in so many of his works, realised here, as always, alla prima.

Though technically handled in wonderful style, Manet changed his mind several times as to the position of the model's arms and of the background grid. The scraping down and repainting eventually filled the grain of the canvas so that the final version wound up painted on a canvas that was virtually smooth. This same surface was recreated for the most authentic reproduction possible.
