     Cette oeuvre est le pendant du "Combat naval du Kearsarge et de l’Alabama» et elle recueillit d’éloquents éloges du vivant de l’artiste. Peinte la même année, elle représente le Kearsarge à l'ancre, sans doute après sa victoire contre l'Alabama.

     La palette des deux œuvres était essentiellement constituée de jaune-citron de cadmium, d’ocre jaune, de terre de Sienne brûlée, de terre d’ombre, de bleu de Prusse, de noir et de blanc. Le support est une toile fine, et le tableau a été monté en couches de peinture très diluée avec l’aide d’un médium à base d’essence d’aspic.

    This is the sister painting to the "Battle between the Kearsarge and Alabama" and is another painting for which Manet won high praise during his life-time.  Done in the same year, this painting shows the  Kearsarge comfortably resting in the bay presumably after sinking the Alabama.

     The palette, as for both works, was comprised of basically : cadmium lemon, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, raw umber, Prussian blue, black and white. The canvas for this work is of fine grain, and the image was built up in layers of very diluted paint mixed with a medium made from a base of spike lavender oil.
