which hangs in the Museum of Art, Philadelphia, USA.

          De toute l’œuvre de Manet, c’est ce tableau qui reçut le plus de louanges du vivant de l’artiste, certainement en raison du style réaliste où chaque élément semble vu à travers un objectif photographique. Il est intéressant de savoir que l’Alabama sudiste fut détruit par le Kearsarge nordiste en 1864 en face de Cherbourg et que son épave fut localisée en 1985 seulement.

     La plus grande difficulté dans la reproduction de cette œuvre fut de restituer aussi parfaitement que possible l’aspect de la mer. De longs essais furent nécessaires pour retrouver la recette qui permit à Manet d’en préciser les teintes bleu-vert ainsi que le médium pour les appliquer de façon adéquate.

           Of all Manet's works, it was this painting that received the most praise during Manet's lifetime ; no doubt because it was done in a realistic style with every element represented as though seen by a camera lens.  It might be interesting to know that the wreckage of the Alabama sunk by the Kearsarge in 1864 off the Cherbourg coast was discovered in 1985 only. 

     Such a perfect rendering of the sea as Manet had been able to achieve was the great challenge in reproducing this work.  Considerable experimentation was necessary to determine Manet's recipe for the precise pigments used to obtain the blue/green shades, and also the likely medium to achieve the brushing qualities essential to success.
