which hangs in the Marmottan Museum in Paris.

     "Au Bal", qui parait au premier abord si simple avec ses couleurs limitées, demanda en fait beaucoup de temps pour arriver à son terme. Berthe Morisot semble avoir d'abord zébré sa toile, puis l'avoir laissée sécher  jusqu'à ce qu'elle soit prête à recevoir de nouvelles fines applications. Mais dans le cours de la réalisation, la rapidité des débuts laissa bientôt place à un travail plus fouillé et plus réfléchi. "Au Bal" est une oeuvre très délicate qui exclut toute idée de précipitation, et les séances successives furent rendues réalisables en souplesse par la simple utilisation de l'huile d'oeillette et l'essence de térébenthine (le médium habituel au temps de Berthe Morisot), qui à mon avis  sont les ingrédients qu'elle utilisa pour ce travail et ceux de cette période.

     "Au Bal", which at first appeared simple with its limited colours, took considerable time to complete. Morisot appears to have slashed away at first, then left the work, and started again when what she had painted had dried enough to accept more thin layers. But in "Au Bal", the fast painting of the early stages quickly yielded its way to slower detailed work. "Au Bal" is a very delicate work that could not be rushed, and all the necessary sessions were made smoothly executable by the simple use of  poppy oil and terpentine ( a standard medium in Morisot's time), which are the ingredients I'm convinced she used in this and all her works of this period.
